Branitz Park in Cottbus is the late work of the garden designer Prince Hermann of Pückler-Muskau (1785–1871). The "green prince" began transforming barren agricultural land into a landscape park in 1846. Through elaborate land modelling, the creation of artificial waterways and lakes, and the skilful composition of tree groves and solitary trees, an idealised park and cultural landscape was created on an area covering more than 620 hectares, which still invites visitors to stroll and linger today. The two greened earth pyramids are the unique hallmark of Branitz Park. Prince Pückler had them built as a reminder of his travels to the Orient. The larger of the two, the Tumulus, sits in a lake and serves as the burial place for Pückler and his wife.

The baroque palace built between 1770 and 1772 forms the park's centrepiece. Its lavishly restored interiors that still feature original furnishings in part allow authentic insights into princely life. A permanent exhibition in the visitor centre on the estate informs about Prince Pückler's park creations and the history of the overall work of art in Branitz. Works by the Cottbus landscape artist Carl Blechen (1798–1840) can additionally be viewed in separate gallery rooms.
