Visitors will find both formal gardens and a landscape park at Altdöbern Castle. This unique fusion of a baroque garden and a landscape park is increasingly evolving into something of a pearl of garden art between Berlin and Dresden. Work has been underway for several years now to restore the contributions of renowned architects, garden artists and sculptors that can be found here. Restored pathways, fascinating visual axes, elaborate plantings and original park architecture can be discovered at every turn, and the café in the restored orangery treats visitors to some culinary delights.

The eighteenth century baroque castle that nestles amidst almost 60 hectares of exceptional parklands is of particular importance to the community of Altdöbern whose history dates back to the twelfth century. The Saxon general Alexander Dietrich von Eickstedt had the castle built at the start of the century as a three-storey, three-winged complex to replace an old moated castle. Around thirty years later, Carl Heinrich von Heineken commissioned some of Dresden's most renowned artists to transform the castle and park into an extraordinary rococo ensemble of architecture, art and horticulture under the direction of master builder Johann Christoph Knöffel. The garden was enlarged almost sixfold in the process and embellished with canals, water features, fountains, bridges, pavilions and sculptures made from exquisite sandstone. In the late nineteenth century, Count Heinrich von Witzleben had the eminent garden artist Carl Eduard Petzold design a 60-hectare landscape park.

The castle park can be visited at any time of the year. Seasonal highlights during which it is also possible to visit the castle include 'Lust am Garten' in June and 'Parksommerträume' on the second weekend in August. Classical and modern entertainment, tours with guides in period costume, exhibitions and much more are offered during these events, and the castle and park are illuminated with enchanting lights on the Saturday night. On both dates, visitors are able to learn more about how the restoration work is progressing in the park during guided tours with volunteers from the international youth workcamp organisation Internationale Jugendbauhütte and to experience baroque games in the French garden and the musical revival of baroque garden theatre. The restored castle rooms can also be explored during an expert tour on the European Open Heritage Days in September.
